In July 2002, Anjou went to Adelaide for an IB Workshop as she was selected to be a trainer for the MYP. There she met Anthony Coles, the dynamic Head of Middle School (Mercedes College, Adelaide- a reputed IB school in Australia offering both the MYP and the DP) and struck a cord. Shortly after her return to India, Sunaina Shah, Mauli Shah and Kabeer Kathpalia won the national website Designing competition organized by Schoolnet India Ltd. As part of the package, they won a paid trip abroad. This opportunity was converted into an educational exchange, and in February 2003 the three students along with one of our teachers, Tanwinder Kohli went to Australia. (Continue reading …)

Tibetans in Ahmedabad

By editor on Sunday, 24 February , 2008 - 12:33 am

Ahmedabad Mirror article by Pascal Chazot:
Tibetan Jewelimages-1.jpgimages-2.jpg
Recently, when I had to go to Paris, I went searching for some woolens in Ahmedabad. Purchasing a sweater in France was equivalent to a month’s grocery here at home. I was adamant to buy whatever I needed here. The wife dragged me all over C.G. road where some of the prices came as close as the ones on Champs-Elysees. I then dragged the wife to the Tibetan market where I not only bought woolies for myself, but for the whole family.

Apart from the Tibetan market and the odd momo restaurant, the Tibetan presence is scant in Ahmedabad. The ongoing Tibetan festival brings to us a whiff of a bygone era. (Continue reading …)

Cultural Differences are enriching

By editor on Sunday, 24 February , 2008 - 12:31 am

Ahmedabad Mirror article by Pascal Chazot:
Notion of time differs in each cultureimages-4.jpeg I have always been interested by different cultures and my stay in India has been deeply enriching because of the variety of different cultural practices here, some which I have adopted. It amuses me to see how each culture gives value to sometimes opposite practices that can even lead to misunderstandings. I know of business deals that have fallen through because of some cultural differences that are misinterpreted.

The notion of time for example is a cultural issue. (Continue reading …)

Apnu Hollywood

By editor on Sunday, 24 February , 2008 - 12:30 am

Ahmedabad Mirror article by Pascal Chazot:
Plaster of Paris Ganesh Idols along the pavement One of the most distinctive features of Ahmedabad is the place called Hollywood near Ambavadi. Years ago when I arrived in this city, I was baffled when people casually referred to this ‘Hollywood’. Whatever I might have been expecting, nothing prepared me for what I saw. Why is the place called Hollywood? I think it was Ashish Lakhia who once told me that it was while a firang couple was being taken around the city, they were fascinated by this place where everything happened in the open. According to legend, they said that so many incredible things can only happen in Hollywood. Since then, the place was christened thus. (Continue reading …)

Identity of a foreigner

By editor on Sunday, 24 February , 2008 - 12:29 am

images-6.jpegAhmedabad Mirror article by Pascal Chazot:
‘Firang’, ‘pardesi’, ‘dhodi chamedi’, ‘foreigner’… during my stay in India, different appellations have been used for me. Yet, my understanding of the term ‘foreigner’ has undergone a sea change. It started from the notion of my being an outsider from a different land. In a remarkably short time I was accepted and appreciated because of my being a Sanskritist and my deep interest in Indian studies and scriptures. Later, as I married an Indian and someone born in Gujarat, I became ‘one of them’. (Continue reading …)
