THE PET AFFAIR

Recently the students of MGIS celebrated an animal day in which we came across owners of hamsters, snakes, Irish setters, pugs etc. This event displayed an upcoming trend of people in the choice of exotic pets. What is influencing people to turn to animals? How does having a pet influence the owner’s lifestyle? We went around interviewing exotic pet owners and asked them to share their views about the role their pets play in the lives and achieved interesting answers.

Kashish Kacheria who owns hamsters says, “Its like my own baby. When I feel lonely they are always there to give me company. They may not speak my language but they understand my emotions and their listening skills make me feel very secure”.

Where on one end Janvi Karwal who works with animals in the zoo and also owns a parrot, a snake, a dog and hamsters says, “I build a sense of responsibility, as I am responsible for their lives. Animals have selfless love and it just makes me very happy when a dog comes running or a hamster begins squeaking when I enter the house. I even had a red sand boa. Though their characteristics represent less bonding with other creatures, yet the presence of my slinky gave me company”.

On the other hand Bernard Marescot, a well-known French Producer talks about his fear for snakes and how he overcame it. “When I was 22 years old I was scared of snakes. Though I enjoyed animals (a family trait); I’ve always had dogs. I finally thought it wasn’t sensible to be scared of snakes. So I got home a new family member, a Boa. Even though my servants ran away and warned the rest, still I had my boa besides me because the snake was now my family. Ever since, I have got over my fear for snakes”. Even Lissa Chazot a faculty member at MGIS says “I had a snake which I loved a lot but as I didn’t know what to feed it, I preferred to hand it to someone who could take good care of it.

These pet owners genuinely displayed their attachments with their pets and prove that in this 21st century, there are people who still care for animals and are ready to sacrifice anything for their well-being.

Hence, living with pets is a learning experience, which teaches us responsibilities and how to share affection for creatures unlike us. They don’t only give us company but are excellent stress busters and great listeners. So when are you getting home a pet for yourself?
