In 2007 once again, two of our students Zara Desai (DP1) and Saher Shodhan (DP2) got selected by AFS and went on an exchange programme to US and Brazil for one full academic year. Here is what Saher has to say about his experience. Zara’s post will be put up shortly.
SAHER SPEAKS -
Brazil is not a country that many people from India, or for that matter most people in the world are familiar with. Last year I was given the chance of a lifetime when AFS was introduced to me by MGIS. AFS came to MGIS and had a presentation on the different programs they offer and what the application process consisted of. To be honest, I wasn’t too keen on applying because I never thought I would be one of the hundreds of candidates who applied. But thanks to my school and a little motivation from my friends and parents I applied for it. Eight months later, here I am sitting in my room in Brazil watching the ocean. Who would have guessed that I would be selected?

The ‘Matka Fridge’ project for the village community

One of our memorable projects was a collaboration between the MYP Year 3 students of MGIS and the 7th Standard students of the Bopal Primary School (BPS), a rural government-run school. It is important to point out that the Bopal Primary School like most Government schools in India cater to the poorest of the poor. In BPS, the student community belongs to the backward castes and scheduled tribes.
While the Indian constitution considers all citizens equal, the caste system is still prevalent and the lower castes are considered untouchables. The average income of these students’ parents is around USD 40 per month.

Here is a short movie done by the students of MYP Year 3 within this project… There are lots more at our page on youtube.com.
In the beginning of the academic session, students reflected on the past year’s activities and charted out their expectations for the coming year. Most of the students had enjoyed working on the media project last year and wanted to continue their tryst with computers. It was jointly decided to work upon movie making this academic session. Making a movie at this age and within a set deadline was a very challenging and ambitious task hence this project was a challenge both for the students and the teacher. (Continue reading …)

MYP Year 3 is continuing a bilingual email exchange with College Hippolyte, a French school in New Caledonia from last year. They have also initiated an email exchange with students of Mercedes College, Australia this year. They are looking for other exchanges as well, as their class project requires them to be open to the world. In the later phase of the Globe Project, they will be required to compile scientific data about the atmosphere from different countries. For more information you can contact the students directly on mgismission007@yahoo.fr or their class teacher, Lissa Chazot on lissa@idealfoundation.com
